The First Tee

Greetings from the golf shop!

There are plenty of hot topics at Scepter Golf Club this month. Primarily, the heat has been the subject of most discussions as golfers come in from their rounds. Please remember to start your day by hydrating and not waiting until you feel thirsty when you are planning to be out on the golf course in this warm weather. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly and no one wants that sick feeling.

Everyone is eager to learn when our new Falcon-nine will open and how it will be incorporated into our existing rotation. We have been doing our best to communicate with each fixture group in order to accommodate your schedules in the interim and thank you for your cooperation. Based on several factors, we are now planning to open the Falcon-nine on Aug. 16 to rotation with Ibis and Osprey.

Since our last communication, specifically regarding our course conditions, we have seen constant improvement in the greens at Scepter Golf Club. This is a result of the intensive program as we are regularly top-dressing and fertilizing the greens. Just like when you fill a divot in the fairway with sand, the top-dressing helps the Bermuda grass to grow laterally and fill in quickly. Many greens on our course have seen tremendous improvement from this practice. The details are just as important, as are the routines and consistency. Our goal is for the entire picture to continue improving. Thank you for your suggestions as they are taken seriously and reviewed with our course superintendent.

With a great deal of man hours, we are working hard every day on elevating the conditions on the Falcon-nine. Some of these improvements you will see immediately and some will take some time. Golfers can expect to see continued work and improvement to bring that course along.

For our golfers, it is with your help that we can do a better job in the golf shop of serving your needs. In order to have the pairings available online in advance, we must have the most up-to-date list of players in your group by noon two days in advance. This will also allow us to adjust the number of tee times your group may require. On the day of play, the captain of the group is the ideal person to provide our counter staff with the updated list of names. With this system we should be able to provide the best service possible for your groups.

We now have a starter working every day at Scepter Golf Club. Part of the starter's duties are to greet each and every group playing at our course prior to their round. Most importantly, it is his job to monitor and control the play starting on each one of our nines. The tee sheet is a guide we use for planning the many golf rounds to be played each day. It is his responsibility, along with our ranger, to coordinate and direct the traffic around the course in a timely manner each day.

There is a great deal of planning that goes into each day of tee times and it not only takes good planning from the golf shop and a good starter, but a great group of golfers. We thank you in advance for working with our starters and rangers as they try to help groups maintain their position on the course.

It is a pleasure working at a place where so many people enjoy golf in their retirement. As a way of making golf accessible to absolutely everyone, we are in the process of installing a set of orange tees on the course. They are being rated and can be used going forward as a new option at the Club. As an example, the nine-hole ladies group on Tuesdays has already elected to allow golfers to play from the gold or orange tees and have the normal handicap adjustments.

Do you have friends or neighbors who would be interested in getting involved in the game of golf? Did you know that ClubLink has started an engagement program held at the Sandpiper driving range which includes an introductory clinic at no charge? The introductory clinic covers basics like grip, stance, alignment and more, and it is a great way for beginners to get acclimated to the game for NO COST! After each beginner completes the introductory clinic, further instruction is available in a four week program for only $50. For information on clinics and availability please call 813-634-3377 or email Greg Coffin at

We are excited to announce our first member appreciation event to be held on Monday, Sept. 5 at Scepter Golf Club at 8:30 a.m. It will be a two person scramble format with a cookout after play and fun games on the course during play, prizes and raffle drawings.

Thank you all for such a warm welcome at Scepter Golf Club and you know my door is always open to input and suggestions on how to make your golf experiences great ones.
